WINEMAKER NOTES For the first time, Bogle’s unique Petite Sirah Port was sourced from the Old River Vineyard, directly across Elk Slough from the Bogle homestead. These 12 acres of Petite Sirah were planted in 1997 and have yielded exceptionally rich and jammy fruit, just perfect for the creation of Bogle’s ruby-style port. Selected rows of these vines were not harvested with the rest, allowing the grapes to ripen to 26.2 degrees brix before being selectively hand-picked on October 15, 2005. At 12 degrees brix, fortification occurred and fermentation was halted. The result was a luscious Petite Sirah Port with an alcohol of 19.0% and a residual sugar of 9.0%. The newly made port was then aged in neutral French and American oak barrels for 18 months. This year’s vintage displays the heady aromas of ripe plums and summer blackberries wrapped in elusive whispers of pepper. The voluptuous finish brings it all together with hints of old-fashioned cigar boxes, spicy cocoa and warm berry pie.
