Our Family’s Commitment
California Rules for Sustainability, Certified Green
In 2010, we were one of the first wineries growing grapes statewide to adhere to strict sustainable growing practices. Today, our commitment to growing green has expanded from our 1,500 acres of estate vineyards to our 91 partner growers located across California.
Where does the California Rules for Sustainability come from?
The California Rules for Sustainability is a branch of the Lodi Rules for Sustainability. The program, started by grape growers in Lodi, California, was a way to distinguish growers who follow strict guidelines to growing green. Starting with the 2017 vintage, all of our 91 growers will implement the California Rules for Sustainability standards.
To reward our partner growers’ efforts, we pay an additional bonus of $25 per ton for growing grapes sustainably. Bogle Vineyards is one of only three growers to do so in California and have paid our partners an additional $2 million for their efforts without passing that cost on to consumers.
Currently, nearly 70% of the grapes that come to Bogle are Certified Green by the California Rules.
What does this mean?
Each vineyard certified by the California Rules for Sustainability go through a rigorous certification process. Annual audits of each field ensure that the high standards of the California Rules are being met, including water usage, pest abatement and all other farming practices.
Why is the seal important?
The seal on the bottle means the wine you are drinking is made with grapes that are grown sustainably and certified by an independent third party. Currently, Bogle has the seal on those wines that meet the qualification – that at least 85% of the grapes in the bottle are certified. With the 2017 vintage, we hope to be able to apply the seal to all our wines.
The California Rules for Sustainability seal also represents our dedication to not only making high-quality wines at prices all families can afford, but it signifies our dedication to the land. We want to be able to produce Essential Red, Merlot, Phantom, Chardonnay and our other varietals for generations to come. We believe the best way to ensure these wines continue to meet your standards is by caring for the land that provides us the grapes.
While you may soon see more wineries also posting various sustainable seals on their wines, the California Rules for Sustainability is the most stringent certification process in the country and the only one to be certified by an independent third party. As the 2017 vintage is bottled in the next few years, you will see all of our wines meet the highest threshold for sustainability.

Vendor Partnership – Making an Impact
By communicating how important sustainability is and why it is important for winery partners to follow similar goals, we can inspire other companies to become more sustainable as well. Vendors are chosen carefully and all have demonstrated that sustainable methods are an important cultural value for their company.
- Cork forests around the world are family farmed, 100% sustainable and are a critical source of CO2 reductions in the world. By using cork finishes in nearly all our wines, Bogle helps perpetuate this renewable resource.
- All papers used within the winery are SFI or FSC certified to ensure that all paper comes from 100% sustainable forests.
- All of our printers have demonstrated a keen commitment to sustainable printing methods.
